![[User Picture]](http://l-userpic.livejournal.com/14142420/869283) [Link] | "I read the first two Harry Potter books this weekend," said Eric quickly.
"The stories are definitely entertaining," he exclaimed quietly, "but Rowling doesn't seem to be the greatest writer."
Eric went on to give other examples of why this seemed to be the case. But he was interrupted--it seemed as though something suspenseful was about to happen! But it immediately didn't.
"I'll still read the rest of them," he said sagely, "though."

hehehe... This post is a triumph.
Also, I'll take your word for it, since I'll probably never read them.
that is, of course, your choice.. but they really are good stories and there are even moments of good writing, it is just a bit inconsistent :)
I started reading the first book years ago, but gave up after a few chapter.. this time I've had more inertia and managed to actually get into the story and keep going (started book 3 this morning)
Eh, I may have gotten into them back when the series was still new, but I think that now I'm a bit intimidated by the amount of books there is in the series... I may have missed a critical period, if you will. :)
And I am also lazy :)
J.K Rowling: storyteller, yes. wordsmith, no.
I hesitate to make that distinction because I think things like suspense and pacing are a storytelling aspect, and she's pretty hit-or-miss on those so far
one thing she does do well is write annoying characters.. when she wants you to hate a character, you really hate that character
I am, of course, not trying to say I'm any better.. don't want to give that impression, I'm just complaining out loud because complaining is funny :)
complaining IS funny, especially when you do it out loud. in public...
...about invisible kittens. :-)
the hit-or-miss factor might be her fortunate accident; doesn't random reinforcement supposedly pack a lot of heat?
I only meant that the HP books kept my attention, which is noteworthy considering its span is sho...hey, a sailboat!!

Rowling's pacing issues are what almost made me quit reading HP. Cursed fascinating descriptive writing pulling me back in! Of course, then I just got annoyed by how monumentally messed up the wizarding world as she's built it is. Talk about a vicious, nasty society... |
